collage is a layering tool where edge conditions and fields are realized through material, shape, and color. how the materials are shaped and assembled is both an additive and reductive process of assemblage.
sequence [1] : tailoring paper
to prepare for collage work, paper is painted , some on rough water color sheets, others on drawing paper. a palette is tailored for work to begin.
sequence [2] : tearing silhouettes
silhouettes and spots multiply through shaping and molding with the hands. when the paper is ripped towards the maker from the top, a larger and more opaque white, furry edge appears and washes away color residue; if paper is torn away from the maker and under itself, a thin, semitransparent edge forms.
sequence [3] : arranging and placing
arranging is like writing a sentence or a poem--how each word , verb, and punctuation causes action and reaction responses or blissful stillness for the eye to pause. placing is mastered by composition; larger, more opaque members are shouting beings that construct foreground. the joinery of shapes is a particular back-ground song running through each field. listening with the eyes and touch is the means for discovering and interpreting each shape’s intention.
sequence [4] : layering
layering planes of paper, color, paint, and transparencies creates contrast, depth, and structures space.
